Money for Projects
I have many cool projects in the works, but not so much money to dedicate to them, so if you're not sure what to get me, money is a good choice. It's not tacky or unthoughtful because I'm literally putting it on my list. Of course, don't feel obligated.
Gift Cards
The next best thing to project money is gift cards, but only if they are for a useful place. Useful places include Sears, Northern Tool, Amazon.com, and possibly Home Depot.

They have this in any Sears in the hardware department... usually on an end rack.

A bargain at $108 - Great for prototyping! Extremely useful for debug.
