Better than the TS101

Better than the TS101
*Image caption: If you’re looking at this image and thinking “this guy should be a professional product photographer”… first off, you’re too kind and second, I was thinking the exact same thing.* If you’re choosing between the TS101 and the Pinecil then I’ll make this review short, get the Pinecil. Because other reviewers aren’t as thoughtful as I am, I didn’t have the luxury of knowing the above so I bought both. I first unboxed and plugged-in the TS101 and right away the iron started heating up ridiculously fast. As I fumbled around trying to turn it off I was then thoroughly confused by the menu system, so much so that I ended up going into “boost” mode which made it even hotter. This rough start was not at all surprising considering most Chinese products have horribly confusing software even if the hardware is insanely good. So I did some research and found out that most soldering hobbiests prefer IronOS which is an open-source OS that is (if you haven’t guessed) specifically for smart soldering irons. It turns out that the TS101 can be flashed with IronOS so I thought perfect let’s do that. Which brings me to my final reason for convincing you to go with the Pinecil - depending on your computer, the OS you’re running, the cable you’re using, whether your TS101 is authentic or not, and which year it was manufactured.. you may not be able to flash it or even upgrade the firmware. There’s numerous posts online about this, so much so that I believe the TS101 is no longer recommended by those who developed IronOS. If you are lucky and all the stars in China align for you then you may be fortunate enough to install ironOS on your TS101, I was not. So I put the TS101 away and grabbed the Pinecil. The pinecil V2 (identified by the green grip) already has IronOS pre-installed on it so we’re already off to a much better start. After plugging it in for the first time the Pinecil did not rapidly start heating, instead it presents you with a very thoughtful and easy to navigate menu complete with animated icons and scrolling text describing what each menu item does. In the time it took me to fumble around with the TS101 and unsuccessfully try to turn it off, I was already changing my Pinecil’s settings to my liking and learning about all the many features it has to offer that the TS does not (or perhaps weren’t explained in its horrible menu). Outside of the menu, the Pinecil supports up to 88W OOTB compared to the TS101’s 65W. Supposedly the TS101 can support higher wattages with the latest firmware, but since it may be impossible for you to update said firmware let’s just assume it doesn’t. Lastly, the Pinecil comes with a newer style Pine designed soldering tip (6.2ohms) compared the the longer TS-style tip (8 ohms), but it supports both. The benefit of the short tip (ST line) on the Pinecil (other than the lower electrical resistance and improved ergonomics) is that the thermocouple is closer to the end of the tip itself which provides more accurate temp readings. In conclusion, get the Pinecil V2. If for some reason you’re still considering the TS101 at this point then make sure you get an authentic Miniware and not one of the clones Amazon also carries like Uy Chan. You might have a better chance of flashing the firmware on an authentic but even that is a gamble.

    I've seen the Pinecil around for a while and decided to upgrade to upgrade from my Weller WLC100. Holy smokes is this thing amazing! I always thought that my Weller was a great iron because of all the rave reviews and I was just inept at soldering. The very first time I used the Pinecil I was blown away and how nice and easy soldering went. I can never go back.

    PROS:
    * Heats up in seconds
    * Very comfortable to use
    * The small size makes soldering in small spaces a breeze
    * You can power it with a all kinds of different power supplies
    * Works with TS-100 tips

    CONS:
    * The included tip isn't the best for general soldering. I ended up getting a TS-D24 tip and now it's about perfect.
    * The tension screw that keeps in the tip requires a tiny screwdriver that's not included and is annoying to deal with. I just replaced it with a M2x4mm thumb screw and it works great.

    It's completely bare bones and requires you to have your own power supply, but I absolutely love it. I've told all my friends that they need to get one.

    I got this to replace a cheap 6W USB Soldering iron I had bought years ago. This will not work if you don't have a decent power source connected to it (think old cell phone charger/power bank) as it will quickly try to pull more power than the old USB chargers can provide. I connected it to a QC3 charger and it works perfectly, same with a QC2 charger, this iron heats up super quick, I haven't set to heat up to 666° F and it reaches that in about 45 seconds, it can go higher however I do not need it to go higher for what I do as that could burn a PCB especially if your not great at soldering. When I'm done soldering I'll unplug the iron then plug it back in so I can monitor the temperature as it cools down, and it cools down from my temps in about 2 minutes. I would recommend this iron if you want something that is portable and can be used with a decent battery bank that can provide QC2 voltages. It is not going to make.you the world's best soldering tech overnight, but this is a great iron to help you get there, or help you get those soldering tasks done as I have not had any issues, the only thing I have that will heat a wire up faster is my soldering gun but that will burn a PCB if I try to use it.

    Good power. Good temperature control. Highly portable. Inexpensive.

    The Pinecil v2 tip is shorter than those used with v1 and ts100. It also has lower resistance and heats up a little quicker. I like the shorter tip, but it's also nice that the Pinecil v2 can auto-detect and use the longer tips. Although the longer tips work well, I wish the shorter 6.5 ohm tips were more available. I haven't found them on Amazon yet, but Pine64 and some of its affiliates have them.

    Having both usb-c and dc barrel connector options for power is nice. I found an inexpensive but good usb-c 65w charger and a silicone usb-c cable that work well for power. I also have a lithium 22v battery pack that I use to power it via the barrel connector. (15v and 19v packs can work too.) Many old laptop chargers put out 18-24v at decent amperage and have the right connector, so they also work, although the cords on them can be a bit stiff and unwieldy.

    The firmware that came with it seems good and allows setting and adjusting tip temperatures, standby and idle parameters, and some power and UI options. The hardware is capable of BLE, though SW support for that seems limited for now. The SW is open source and under active development, so maybe we'll see a BLE android app for monitoring temps and managing settings and such from a phone. But it's good even without that.

    Yes, I would buy this again. Yes, I recommend this product.

    Great product and quality company so I don't want to give less that five stars.

    Positives: works incredibly well, great tip, heats super fast, easily controlled with many safety features

    Negatives: needs a usb C cable and power brick to power and the biggest negative, has absolutely zero ergonomics. If you solder for more than like 5 minutes, its difficult to hold and rather uncomfortable compared to other options in the price range. It has a large and heavy square shaped design and ironically is not like a pencil at all.

    Overall love the product and the company but hate the design. If you frequently solder for longer periods of time, stay away, but if you just need to fix a couple of wires here and there, the best there is!

    Heats up fast and is perfect if you want a small iron that still works efficiently. Only complaint is that the usb-c port could have a little bit for depth because most supplies don't push all the way in so it has a little bit of wiggle room. If it pushed all the way in it'd probably be 5 stars, barrel port works perfect though. Other than that it works fast and the sleep feature on it is pretty nice to have if you ever need to walk away for a bit. Good for any hobby soldering and haven't ran into issues from it having a smaller tip than most irons.

    5.0 out of 5 stars This is THE soldering iron
    Reviewed in Canada on November 27, 2024
    This thing absolutely blew my mind. It's hard to describe what my expectations were before I actually got a chance to use it, but it packs so much punch into a small form factor. The iron is sturdy and holds up well under rigorous activity with no loosening of the screw that attaches the tip to the base. All you need to drive one of these things HOT is a 65w Chromebook charger. You can easily hit 350c or higher with that. The iron itself has an intuitive display that shows the temperature and allows you to adjust some settings. I find myself using the temperature boost feature more than I'd expect. You could get a 300 something dollar soldering station, wait for the thing to heat up, and have a big clunky thing on your desk alongside other junk you most likely have as a hobbyist, or you can get one of these and use it with a phone fast charger to get the same performance. If you're trying to stay in a tight budget but are also looking for something that works alot better than you'd expect for the price, this is it. This is THE pick. Don't get one of those dinky blue irons with the inaccurate knob. Get this.

    I’ve been using the Pinecil soldering pen for a little while now, and I’m genuinely impressed! It heats up quickly and works really well for all my soldering needs. The fact that it’s rechargeable is a huge plus for me, as I don’t have to worry about changing batteries or finding a nearby outlet.
