When Madeleine Peyroux's debut, Dreamland, was released in 1996, its success threw her for a loop. She's taken eight years to create this follow-up, and, at age 30, she brings a confidence and resilience to this dozen-song set. She's able to move seamlessly between songs by writers as diverse as Elliott Smith and W.C. Handy, whose title track was popularized by Bessie Smith. Though American-born, Peyroux absorbed the language and culture of France growing up in Paris with her French-teacher mother. On her debut, she covered Edith Piaf, and this time out she wraps herself around "J'ai Deux Amours," which Josephine Baker sang to the Allied troops during World War II. --David Greenberger

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2024Such slow bluesy magic.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2011This is the second album from the hugely impressive Madeleine Peyroux. Coming some 8 years after her adsorbing debut, Dreamland, this album was a long time in the making, but well worth the wait.
Peyroux has a beautiful voice, with a timbre and phrasing that invites favourable comparisons with Billie Holliday. In this album she has made a selection of jazz and blues standards and given them her own treatment. Immense care has gone into the recordings, every note sung or played is carefully and thoughtfully done. The backing is light and respectful, giving Peyroux's fine voice centre stage. She sings with an intensity that manages to find new meaning in some of these well worn classics, and she makes them her own.
This is a delightful album of slow burning blues with a broad jazz flavour. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 January 2024Wonderful voice, band, songs and arrangements. Aided and abetted by excellent CD graphics.
This is my seconded copy, the first one purchased years, ago vanished!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2023Smooth bluesy jazz album, just right for relaxing to.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2020Very impressed with Madeleine’s vocal interpretation along with 1st. class accompanying musicians. Easy listening cd. The recording is very well balanced. I rate it 5 stars! The title track Careless Love especially stands out!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2013I heard this CD playing in a shop and I asked the assistant who was singing. I immediately went on to Amazon and found it. I have also put her other albums on my Wish List and can't wait for my Birthday and Christmas when hopefully my daughter will purchase one or two for me
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 March 2017How has it taken me so long to discover her? The best CD I've bought in ages, play it endlessly. Lovely songs, including a favourite Leonard Cohen, and an amazing mellow voice. I see her compared to Billie Holiday - it may not be the "right" thing to say, but I prefer Madeleine!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2021Very good condition and arrived in good time .Great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ohrenschmaus der Extraklasse!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bellissimo!!!!
