Product description
Amazon.co.uk
Sandwiched between the solitary, heart-on-her-sleeve confessions of Blue and the ravishing pop of Court and Spark, 1972's For the Roses captures Joni Mitchell in a deceptively subdued period of transition. Still hewing to a spare sound, Mitchell ventures beyond the elegant folk sources of earlier records to explore her love of blues and jazz-based harmony, writing as much on piano as guitar; thematically, the earnest reveries and heartbroken dirges of before give way to a more detached, even journalistic perspective and darker, grittier settings, most strikingly on "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire". "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" was the set's nominal hit, yet in hindsight the keepers here are found in evolutionary pieces like the jazz-tinged "Barangrill", the rock-infused "Blonde in the Bleachers" and in more sober meditations like "Woman of Heart and Mind"--testaments to her restless growth and signposts to the more mature music ahead. --Sam Sutherland

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 September 2017One of the best albums ever made, in any genre. I borrowed it from a friend at school on release (it was passed around the class, everyone having a good giggle at the photo on the inside cover), eventually bought my own vinyl copy, then got the CD when that came out. I never, ever, tire of listening to it. I believe it slightly has the edge over the also magnificent Court and Spark because of the latter's occasional jazz touches - this is stark and raw from start to finish, with a little commercial detour via the lovely You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio. Every song is stunning, but I will take Ludwig's Tune in my heart to the grave with me. When she cries "Jesus, well then you yell it!" I melt, every time. It's about time Joni's catalogue was given the deluxe reissue treatment. I'm not an audiophile, but how great would a cache of live, alternate or unreleased recordings with each album be?
Finally, you can get For The Roses for a bargain price. If you don't already have it - why not?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2021The fifth studio album by Mitchell and one of the seminal recordings in her rich and illustrious discography; it should go without saying that this should be in any Mitchell fan's collection, but I've said it anyway.
I won't comment on individual tracks, as everyone has particular favourites and let's face it, Mitchell has never recorded a duffer – so just go out and buy it if one is new to her albums or if one just wants it on CD to replace those well-worn LPs.
All the lyrics are included in the liner notes; the CD has a playing time of 40.20 minutes – go to the mp3 download page to hear the sound samples.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 October 2016Not my favourite Joni album, but still head and shoulders above everyone else. After 'Roses', Joni's range widened. The follow-up, Court and Spark, saw the introduction of jazz inflections that increasingly permeated the rest of her seventies albums, in the company of legends like Jaco Pastorius and Herbie Hancock. But Roses is a hint of things to comes, with more orchestration, and a darker edge. Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire points the way. And, by the way, Joni was doing Anglo-Saxon expletives way before Shaun Ryder. What a gal!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2015I suppose being a fan I am biased but I listen to lyrics a lot and Joni writes the best It confusing the delivery expected dates way out.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2018I bought this album on CD, because this one was one of the few I was missing. Then I noticed this album from 1972, marks the shift from earlier beeing a singer of folk music, towards developing her individual style in the after comming albums with elements of jazz and fusion, combined with elements of pop and rock. I highly recomend this album for lover of Joni Mitchells music from the rest of the 70ies..
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 April 2016Listened to it often whilst I was a student in the 70's, never bought it. Heard a track on the radio and thought I'd get the CD. Wish I'd bought it years ago, it's well written, well performed, well produced. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2014How did Joni's music pass me by for so many years?
Actually, I think it's because her recorded performances can't be appreciated unless played on a decent system.
As simple as that.
This album is beautiful beyond words.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2015My all time favourite Joni Mitchell album, with a lot of beautiful piano and Joni singing her heart out. Nothing like Blue, but an amazing album in its own right, try it and see if you agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars JONI
Eternelle JONI J'adore cette songwriter, je ne me lasse pas de l'écouter. J'ai acheté toute la période folk, rien à jeter chez elle, elle m'émerveille toujours autant et depuis de longues années. Longue vie Joni.
