Product description
Product Description
'In a Silent Way' is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Miles Davis, released on July 30, 1969. He continued to experiment through the 1960s and, heavily influenced by German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, fused jazz with electronica on the influential albums 'In a Silent Way'. Upon its release, the album was met by controversy among music critics, particularly those of jazz and rock music, who were divided in their reaction to its experimental musical structure and Davis's electric approach. Since its initial reception, it has been regarded by fans and critics as one of Davis's greatest and most influential works.
Amazon.co.uk
Miles Davis's famous mid-1960s quintet, featuring saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock, was intact until just a few weeks before his new, electric ensemble recorded In a Silent Way. Legendary as a kind of line in the sand challenging jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, In a Silent Way hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early 1970s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass and rekindled the tonal palette that Davis had explored famously with Kind of Blue. But In a Silent Way remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient colour exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Davis takes many long, breathy solos, and they glisten in a burnished blue against his new group's strange admixture of musical moods. --Andrew Bartlett

4* recording, stunning horns, piano & guitar but the bass is weak as the organ has a very strong presence. The drum sound is limited to the cymbals & tends to lack depth & presence. A vibrant, powerful recording with a lot of presence. WOW music however.
• Clarity - Excellent
• Channel separation - Excellent
• Channel balance - stunning
• Sound Stage – wide, detailed, spacious, airy. Very good projection
• Distortion – none audible
• Compression – excellent dynamic & frequency range
• Atmosphere – very studio sound, little sense of space & place but very good feeling of being there
• Bass – low frequencies – the organ is omnipresent but there is a lot of variation in the drum sound, it tends to be the cymbals that dominate. The bass is a long way back in the mix
• Treble – high frequencies – the electric guitar has tremendous tone & presence as does the electric piano. The horn sound is stunningly mournful, wistful, sad & delicate yet with real power when needed
• Vocals - none
I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.
As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.
Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 February 2024I used to own a cassette copy of this way back in my pre- CD player days. It wasn't a favourite recording of mine at that time. But this digitally remastered CD, in combination with a superior Hifi system, has opened my ears to the brilliance of this album which I now find compelling. The listener is cocooned in a rich tapestry of keyboards and organ, bass and drums, with Miles's serene trumpet soaring over the beautiful soundscape. And all for £3.99!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2003“Jazz-rock fusion”… a label that has inspired dozens of mediocre records! But here it is in its primeval and arguably never to be bettered form – a groundbreaking showcase for the talents of artists at the peak of their skills and an addictive and quite brilliant example of true musical innovation.
Like “Kind of Blue” a decade earlier Miles Davis assembles a stunningly adept peer group – including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Jo Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Chick Corea & Dave Holland – and then pushes their and his playing to previously undiscovered heights. The end result?… jazz improvisation at its very best, with nothing detracting from the unstoppable flow of the satisfyingly tight melodic structures, despite the enormous complexity of what is actually going on, and with the complete record merging into a gloriously unified whole.
“In a Silent Way” quickly draws you into its languidly ethereal atmosphere, driving poly-rhythms and wonderful extemporisations and, like all true jazz masterpieces, pays out enormous bonuses from repeat listening. One of the essential reasons why Miles Davis justifies his reputation and… a template for much future imitation and excess.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2022This is my favourite MD album. Strangely it didn't have a hype sticker confirming the anniversary provenance. After carefully taking the paper sleeve off ( Why why why???) the vinyl was cloudy and looked dreadful.. After a clean, the swirlyness remains however from start to finish it sounds heavenly..not a single pop or crackle and I've QC'd on headphones. Very odd as I would have bet my mortgage that this was going back! Anyway, it's relaxing, chilled out jazz that should be part of EVERY collection. ...oh, and its dead cheap!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2014Purchased for my husband and as he says you cant beat the sound of music on vinyl. I am no expert on Miles so may be criticized by experts on jazz but I would recommend. The album from this company came well presented, wrapped and in good time. They always send a secondary back up e-mail to let you know when they have dispatched so there is always a means of direct communication. I have never had to return an item but have gone back and ordered several more records as very pleased with company.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2014One of his best albums in my opinion next to 'Bitches Brew'. I first heard Santana's version of this many years ago and loved it. In fact I didn't know it was a Miles Davis piece for quite some time. I gravitated towards this stuff through the improvisational rock bands such as The Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa and appreciating it more as I've matured. This is wonderful stuff. In fact I would recommend this as one of Miles's albums to buy if you're a newbie. Bitches Brew is another must have.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 June 2015Over the years I have bought a wide variety of Miles Davis albums covering the various styles of his glittering career.
This album is my outright favourite - I just love it. It would be in my desert island selection.
Of MD albums Big Fun is up there followed closely by Kind of Blue.
Also have a soft spot for On the Corner - my first MD purchase, on vinyl in about 1976 - took some getting used to but started me on a fascinating journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una obra maestra nocturna
