Caring for your Stud
A MAJOR selling point of one of our big milk companies is that their cows are contented. Any animal, whether cow or dog, will yield much better returns if it is happy and satisfied with its lot in life. Keep all your dogs contented. They react to the weather very much as you do. They like the cold, but they need proper care to be able to meet its rigors. They like the heat too, but they need shade to rest in, cool water to quench their thirst, and the opportunity to dig their paws into the cool damp earth. I have heard ladies remark about the soothing effect of a mud pack on their skin. It is just as comforting to a dog. The only difference is that your dog doesn't use clay which comes at fifty cents or more for a small tube! All he asks is to be allowed to find his own. So if he chooses the wrong spot, as he most likely will if you do not show him the error of his ways, do not punish him. Give him a place where he can dig, and train your dog to use it. Remember that dogs get spring fever just as you do, and keep in mind the pleasant feeling you yourself get from rooting around in the sweet-smelling earth after a winter of inactivity.

Dogs are clean animals, so give them a chance to keep themselves clean. As a matter of fact, a dog is cleaner in his habits than a lot of people. As proof of this, observe the dog chained up for a time. When he chooses the spot for his toilet, you will find that he will go as far from his kennel as his chain will allow, and he will always use the same spot. So help him all you can. Do your part to keep his kennel clean and you will find that he will cooperate. He does not appreciate the presence of fleas in his bed any more than you would like bedbugs in yours. See that he has fresh bedding, and bathe him sufficiently to keep his person clean.
